Ballet Workshops For Nursery & Primary Schools

Ballet Workshops For Nursery & Primary Schools

The Gambia Ballet Factory runs free 3 day ballet dance and educational workshops in local nursery and primary schools in Gambia that introduces the basic concepts of classical ballet, movement, music appreciation, rhythm and poise.

The Gambia Ballet Factory mission is to help increase the participation in classical ballet in The Gambia. Our long term vision is to build a Ballet, Contemporary Dance and Performing Arts Centre where the best talents in Gambia can be nurtured, developed and showcased.

Gambia Ballet Factory offers a developmentally appropriate beginner ballet program that aims to build self-confidence and self-esteem in young children and actively fosters a love of dance at the most magical time in a little dancers life.

We also have a focus on self-expression and interpretation as our little dancers dramatise different styles of music.

For true beginner students, these 3 day ballet workshops are the perfect introduction to the fundamentals of ballet with the aim of developing a skill set in traditional dance elements in a non-competitive, fun environment with musical accompaniment.

We introduce important ballet basics as well as encouraging imagination and creative movement. Our lessons include gentle introductions to ballet feet and arm positions, as well as centre and cross floor exercises.

During the 3 day introductory workshop we will identify the girls who show potential talent or real commitment and from this selection process Gambia Ballet Factory will choose 12 girls to receive fully funded ballet lessons at our ballet studio in Bijilo.

Our ballerinas learn about moving in a routine and working together as a group and also learn concentration and endurance and start to become more proficient in fundamental ballet steps, techniques and concepts.

3 Day Introduction To Classical Ballet

Our ballet introduction and education program in The Gambia is entirely funded by donations, project grants and philanthropic support.

Day 1 gives children the opportunity to stretch and increase self-confidence while being introduced to basic ballet concepts, skills and some free-form movement exploration. We use film clips, books and classical music to introduce the children to Ballet and give them the confidence to participate in the second day’s activities.

Day 2 is an introduction to ballet basics that uses methods designed for young imaginative minds and bodies. Students begin to work on body alignment and posture as well as develop self-expression through creative movement. We distribute ballet shoes to the class to inspire participation, team spirit and a sense of belonging to the class in order to develop a simple dance routine.

Day 3 teaches students the fundamentals of ballet technique. The teacher will emphasize body placement, and spatial awareness. Students will also explore ballet-based improvisation. We continue to teach the fundamentals of ballet allowing the children to develop and present a short dance routine to their fellow class mates

We are happy to receive volunteers, sponsorship, funding or donations of anything involving ballet, dance and the performing arts.

We would be thrilled if you could offer us any support or even just guidance on the best way forward?

In West Africa 16 million girls are not in school due to complex social, political, traditional and economical factors. Everything from marriage practices to disease to poverty to seasonal labour requirements contribute to this catastrophe.

Using ballet, dance and the performing arts, the Ballet Hss Decided mission is to help these young underprivileged girls to get into school, expand their horizons, explore their creativity and build the friendships, confidence and self esteem to live a better life. Get Involved
